If you’re heading to Ayamonte for shopping, you’re in for a treat! This quaint coastal town in southwestern Spain, right on the Portuguese border, is renowned for its fantastic shopping scene. Stroll through its narrow, winding streets to discover affordable clothing, ceramics, and shoes. Don’t miss the food market, where you can snag great deals and pick up delicious souvenirs to take home.

Let’s go shopping in Ayamonte!

The Best Shopping Streets in Ayamonte

In the small charming streets in the center, you’ll find most of the town’s lovely shops. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with vendors offering everything from clothing and shoes to handmade ceramics, local artworks, and traditional Spanish delicacies like olive oil and cheese.

Markets in Ayamonte

Mercado de Abastos de Ayamonte – the fine food market

Don’t miss the local food market, Mercado de Abastos de Ayamonte. The food market is located right by the pedestrian streets and is open every morning until 2 PM. If you want fresh fish for grilling, get there early! You can also combine your visit with some churros, sold from the two stalls outside the food market every morning until 11:30 AM.

P.S. Our favorite greengrocer, where we shopped every week during the three months we stayed in Ayamonte, is in the second row when you walk in from the churros stall towards the south. You can recognize it by the line – but you will also get the best mandarins, bell peppers, and melons!

Finally, every Saturday there is also a market behind the bus station on the edge of town. Here you can buy cheap rubber shoes, second-hand clothing, and some antiques.

Shopping Center in Ayamonte

Yes, it is written in singular – because there is only one! Just north of the center, next to Lidl and McDonald’s, is the town’s shopping center, La Plaza. There are about 10 stores with perfume, shoes, and clothing. On Saturday afternoons, the large supermarket Mercadona is filled with Portuguese shoppers coming to take advantage of lower grocery prices. If you dream of a grand shopping spree with rows of stores, the nearest large city, Huelva, has long pedestrian streets and a huge shopping center. Souvenirs – What to Take Home from Ayamonte?

Canned fish at Martim Dorado

Canned fish at Martim Dorado

Besides plenty of shoe stores, flamenco dresses for children, and beautiful paintings, Ayamonte specializes in edible souvenirs. If you want to take home really good ham or cheese, visit Delicatessen Merkajamón, which is located by the water just behind the food market. Here you can also enjoy a lovely glass of wine and rest your legs after all your shopping.

Over time, Ayamonte has also become a rich town due to all the fish caught just off the Atlantic Ocean. In the early 20th century, the area made a fortune: both from fish and especially from salt, which was the way to preserve the fish.

Fishing is still active in the area, and wherever we go, there is a large fleet of fishing boats. The old canning factories down at the harbor have now moved out behind the town, and it’s easy to find canned tuna that has been landed and packed here in the area. If you want a local canned fish souvenir of the highest quality, visit Martim Dorado right by the market hall. If you have never tasted freshly caught canned tuna, know that it is quite a delicacy and a completely different product from what you can buy in your local supermarket at home!

Opening Hours in Ayamonte

In Ayamonte, the siesta is still tradition, and most shops are open on weekdays from 10 AM to 1:30 PM and then again from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM. On Saturdays, shops are open from 10 AM to 1:30 PM. On Sundays, all shops in the town are closed, except for smaller kiosks. The shopping center does not observe siesta but is still closed on Sundays.

Remember to check the calendar for public holidays in Spain, when everything is closed.

Also Take a Shopping Trip to Portugal!

From Ayamonte, there is a small ferry to the Portuguese town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio. In just a quarter of an hour, you can be in a completely different country – with even more lovely shops! Santo Antonio is a bit more tourist-friendly than Ayamonte, and many shops also open on Sundays. Where We Stayed During Our Long Stay Holiday in Andalusia!

For us, it has always been a dream to travel south as winter approached in Denmark. Pack the suitcase, lock the door, and just head off to the light and warmth. In Ayamonte, we found the perfect town house that became the setting for our three-month workation.

The charming blue and white town house, Flor de Sal, is located right at the top of the town, overlooking the salt flats. From the top terrace, you can also see the large Guadiana River and across to Portugal, and south all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Inside, the charming decor was in the same blue and white color scheme, and it had everything we needed, including a workspace with a desk. In short, the house was everything we had been looking for: authentic, cozy, and with a private courtyard where we spent many hours grilling and just lounging in the afternoon sun. Read more about renting Flor de Sal by clicking on the pictures and links.
