10 ATTRACTIONS FOR CHILDREN IN HAMBURG

HAGENBECK TIERPARK
Hagenbeck Tierpark was founded in 1874, and today it is considered one of the most important zoos in Europe. There are over 1800 animals – orangutans, tigers, giraffes, kangaroos and giant turtles – and the tropical department has sharks, spiders and snakes. And best of all, it’s possible to feed some of the animals and touch them! Animal snacks can be purchased at the souvenir shop at the entrance.
HARBOR TOUR IN THE PORT OF HAMBURG
Do not deceive yourself for a harbor tour. There are several boats to choose from, and they all depart from Landungsbrücken. Take the Mississippi Queen paddle wheel river steamboat, where you can dine on board, and get a tour of the second largest port city in Europe among the huge container ships.
MINIATURE WUNDERLAND
Miniature Wunderland Railway Museum is located in one of the old warehouses in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt and is the largest digitally controlled model railway in the world. Here you can visit the German Alps or take a trip to the Wild West. The trains run around in fantastic landscapes of cars, ferries, tiny people and light signals that you can turn on and off yourself.
MAHNMAL ST. NIKOLAI
Also use the trip to have a good talk about war and why it is so wrong. In the crypt under the church Mahnmal St. Nikolai is a museum about World War II, also suitable for smaller children – there are only photos of ruins and no dead people. You can also take the elevator up to the church tower and enjoy the fantastic views of Hamburg.
THE OLD ELBE TUNNEL
Would you like to go under the water – then take a walk in the old Elbe tunnel from 1911. The tunnel is located right by the Landungsbrücken and continues all the way over to the opposite river bank. Notice the elevators, which in the past hoisted the cars 24 feet down and up again.
HAMBURG SUBMARINE MUSEUM
In the U-Bootmuseum Hamburg you can dive below sea level in the 90 meter long, 8 meter wide and 14 meter high U-434, and see the claustrophobic conditions under which the crew lived. U-434 is located in Hamburg’s harbor canal Baakenhafen, close to HafenCity.
CHOCOVERSUM
Hamburg’s Chocolate Museum, Chocoversum, is a paradise for chocolate lovers. Here you can make your own chocolate and take the guided tour through the museum. See how the chocolate is produced from cocoa beans to the finished chocolate and get a souvenir in the chocolate shop.
PLANTS AND FLOWERS
In the beautiful flower park Planten un Blomen you will also find a huge playground. If the children need to get some energy burned off, it is free to use the playground. Mini golf and trampoline cost a few euros.
THE LARGE LEGO STORE IN HAMBURG
If you are good at persuading, you might be able to lure your parents into the large Lego store on Spitalerstrasse, one of the major shopping streets.

Where Jungfernsteig meets the lake Binnenalster, you will find several lovely cafes where you can relax and enjoy the view. Here, MIO is especially recommended, the cafe serving fun ice cream desserts, shaped like Spaghetti Bolognese or Carbonara, Pizza, Lasagne – or what about an Omelet? The café also serves breakfast and cocktails.
