One of the really big items in the budget for a trip to Los Angeles is the accomodation. It takes a bit of effort to find affordable accommodation in Los Angeles, but it is not impossible.

If you are looking for hotels in Los Angeles on Booking.com, you can see that you can often save money by booking from day to day. Therefore, you can book an overnight stay or two from home. Spend some time on Booking.com once you have arrived and find the next hotel, often with a discount. Especially in a city as big as Los Angeles, it can also be smart to move around the different parts of the city to see it all.

NB! If you find hotel rooms with “Queen” beds, it’s nice to know that one bed is big enough for two. Also see the hotel recommendations at the bottom of the page!

If you rent an apartment with your own kitchen in Los Angeles, you can safe money by cooking yourself. There are many well-stocked supermarkets in the city with a large selection, also of both organic and vegan foods.

Butter up a sandwich and take it with you in your bag when you go out on the town, or get a meal for a few dollars at the many food trucks.

If you just want to experience Los Angeles and get around to see the sights of the city, you don’t need to rent a car. Getting around by bus and metro is easy and cheap. Buy a TAP card for a week for $ 25 – and then you can drive unlimited on the more than 200 bus routes and 6 metro lines.

A ticket to Disneyland is expensive – but not as expensive as to get into Universal Studios! Fortunately, Los Angeles offers many cheap or free attractions and sights.

  • Take a beautiful stroll along the beach from Santa Monica to Venice Beach. It is free to get out on the famous Pier in Santa Monica and the views are good.
  • It’s also free to visit the oldest house in Los Angeles, Avila Adobe. The house has stood since 1818, when the area still belonged to Mexico. Read more about it here and the area’s other free museums: El Pueblo.
  • On New Year’s Day, you can see the Rose Parade in Pasadena for free. The festive New Year’s procession is definitely worth a visit!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR PHONE BILL IN LOS ANGELES

It’s hard to find your way around Los Angeles without Google Maps, but if you don’t have free internet in the US included in your mobile phone subscription, you can work up quite a bill using mobile data abroad.

Fortunately, there is always free internet in Starbucks that you can use when buying a cup of coffee. The same goes for many bookstores, supermarkets and the public libraries.

Also remember to bring a power bank with you so your phone doesn’t run out of power. Not all cafés have plugs available, and you also do not have to look around a converter for your plug.

A GREAT HOTEL IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD

When we were going to Los Angeles, we asked friends and family if they could recommend a good hotel in the city. Trine’s sister and brother-in-law had stayed at The Garland Hotel the year before – which they really liked. They said: It’s a bit expensive, but worth every dollar! Here yo can take a dip in the swimming pool, eat a Nutella toast for breakfast and get a good nights sleep in the large Queen beds that are big enough for two. There is a free shuttle bus to Universal Studios. The hotel is located in the northeastern part of Los Angeles, close to the freeway, so it is easy to get around the city by car.

A GOOD AND AFFORDABLE HOTEL – WITH AN AUTHENTIC DINER

One of our friends recommended a good and affordable hotel close to Hollywood Boulevard, The Adler a Hollywood Hills Hotel. Here you live with Hollywood Boulevard just around the corner and close to both the subway (Hollywood / Vine) and the exit to the freeway. The hotel has its own swimming pool, and there is a refrigerator and microwave in the room. In the same building you will also find The 101 Coffee Shop, an authentic diner with the best breakfast menu.

AN APARTMENT IN LOS ANGELES FOR A FAMILY

Along with the recommendations, we searched around ourselves and eventually found a really nice apartment in Downtown LA. The apartment in Wilshire Apartments met all our needs for location and comfort. The apartment consisted of a room and a combined living room / kitchen, where the living room had a sofa bed. There was a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washer and dryer and TV with the very large TV package.

Upstairs in the other building was the swimming pool and gym, which we had free access to, and a free space in the parking basement was also reserved for us. Just across the road is a large supermarket as well as a Starbucks (with WIFI!).
