Where to shop in Venice?

If you are going shopping in Venice, you’ll need our guide for the best shopping areas. Most of the shops that tourists find are located in the allys from the Rialto Bridge down to St. Mark’s Square, but there are other cozy neighborhoods in Venice with smaller shopping streets where the locals shop. You can read all about it here – and also about which souvenirs you should buy.

The best shopping streets in Venice

Start your shopping trip in Venice with a visit to the Rialto Market just off the Ponte di Rialto. Early in the morning, the fishmongers are selling the day’s catch, and later in the day you can get fresh fruits and vegetables of all colors. Crossing the Rialto Bridge, take your time to enjoy the view and to visit the small shops on the bridge. Here you can buy both Venetian carnival masks, brocade fabrics and other souvenirs.

Throughout the neighborhood on the road from the Rialto Bridge to St. Mark’s Square you will find high street stores such as H&M and Guess, and also craft shops with stationery, Murano glass, gloves and bags. From St. Mark’s Square, continue towards the Accademia vaporetto station. Here you will find the more expensive shops such as Versace, Dior and Dolce & Gabbana, located on the streets Calle larga de l’Ascension, Salizada S. Moise and Calle Larga XXII Marzo.

If you want to shop where the locals go, you can also visit the busy shopping street Strada Nova. The easiest way to get there is by getting off at the vaparetto station Ca ‘D’Oro. There is plenty to look at in the long street and lots of small cafes where you can can get a rest. Do visit the Gelato di Natura ice cream parlor or the Rizzo bakery. Local and authentic is also the smaller Via Giuseppe Garibaldi just south of the old fortification Arsenal.

Shopping centers and shopping malls in Venice

The beautiful luxury shopping center Fondaco dei Tedeschi, or T Fondaco, is located on the banks of the Grand Canal next to the Rialto Bridge. Here, the old Hanse merchants’ trading house has been transformed into a sumptuous shopping center, which will remind you of Harrods in London or KaDeWe in Berlin.

Many locals travel to Marghera on the mainland, to shop in Nave de Vero. Here you will find both international and Italian brands. Buses run directly from Piazzale Roma. If you are looking for the best deals, then also visit Designer Outlet Noventa di Piave, which is located about 45 minutes north of Venice. You can take a shuttle bus right to the door, read more here.

Souvenir shopping in Venice

Everywhere you go in Venice, you see the beautiful masks and glassware from Murano. The small island with the many glassmakers is only a 10 minute boat trip from the vaporetto station F.te Nove, and we can’t recommend you enough to take a the trip to the island. Here you’ll find a large selection of glass ware, from small drinking glasses to huge chandeliers.

If you don’t have the time to visit Murano, then there are plenty of shops in Venice that sell glassware from Murano. Check that the glass is indeed produced on the island and not elsewhere. Also visit the mask shop La Bauta, where the original paper maché masks are produced by hand. You will find it just south of the famous Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari with San Toma as the nearest vaporetto stop.

Opening hours in Venice

If you are going shopping in Venice, the shops usually open between 9 and 10 am and close again at 1 pm. After lunch they’re open from 3 until 7 or 8 pm. On Sundays, the shops are generally closed, but not the tourist shops around St. Mark’s Square.
