The Best Shopping Spots in Granada & the Old Quarter

If you’re planning to go shopping in Granada, here’s a guide to the streets in this beautiful city where you can find some truly great stores. And you can start getting excited! Granada is a wonderful city with vibrant pedestrian streets bustling with life around the clock. During the day, it’s the tourists who fill the city, especially in the old Arab market quarter. Here, you can strike a good deal and buy plenty of beautiful souvenirs to take home.

The main shopping streets are also bustling with life in the evening when the locals have finished work and use their time wisely by strolling around the shops. You’ll find plenty of beautiful Spanish fashion at prices lower than back home, so there’s no need to overfill your suitcase before your vacation in Granada!

The Best Shopping Streets in Granada

You’ll find the best shopping streets right around Plaza Bib-Rambla. For instance, the city’s largest shopping street, Calle Reyes Católicos, is here. You can find all the big chain stores: H&M, Mango, and Desigual.

Gran via de Colón, which adjoins the cathedral, is a cozy and less crowded street with many exciting shops. Also, visit Calle San Anton, where you can really get a sense of how the locals live! In this small street, there are plenty of small bakeries, clothing stores, and cozy cafés.

Alcaicería de Granada

Right by Plaza Bib-Rambla, you’ll also find the city’s old silk market, which had its own section in the souk that once stood here. Today, traditions are kept alive with a bazaar in the best Arab style. The stalls have been rebuilt but still stand where you could originally buy the finest quality silk. Today, it’s a popular place to shop for souvenirs, as the shops primarily sell high-quality handicrafts – but also some junk, so be sure to look carefully.

Albaycin

Albaycin is the old Moorish quarter and the oldest part of Granada. In the small, winding streets, you’ll find plenty of little souvenir shops where you can buy interesting gifts to take home. Look for fajalauza, the traditional glazed pottery with beautiful patterns. This particular style originated right here in Granada during the Middle Ages and draws on the traditions of the Moors’ glazed tiles.

Good shopping streets in Albaycin include Calle Calderería Nueva and Calle Calderería Vieja. Start at Plaza Nueva and make your way up through the small streets in the Arab market. Here, you’ll encounter a world filled with the scent of spices, kebabs, and incense, along with souvenirs in every color of the rainbow.

Shopping Centers in Granada

South of the center, about a half-hour bus ride on bus no. 4 from the cathedral, you’ll find the huge center Nevada Shopping. The center has 280 stores and 40 eateries, so there’s definitely something for everyone! Right in the center, you’ll also find El Corte Inglés at Plaza de Bibataubín.

Opening Hours in Granada

Most stores in Granada are open from 10 AM to 8 PM, while the large shopping centers stay open until 10 PM. Many smaller shops take a siesta and may be closed from 1 PM to 5 PM. On Saturdays, stores are open in the morning and until around 2 PM. On Sundays, only souvenir shops in the tourist areas in the city center and small supermarkets are open. Remember to check the calendar for holidays in Spain, when everything is closed.

Find a Great Hotel in Granada

As mentioned, the Alhambra is Spain’s biggest tourist attraction, and naturally, this drives hotel prices in Granada to the higher end. We decided we’d rather stay somewhere a bit cheaper and enjoy a few extra days in the city. As a result, we stayed for a delightful five nights at the Hotel Andalucia Center. It’s about half the price if you’re willing to walk an extra ten minutes outside the city center.

Hotel Andalucia Center is part of a hotel chain where we’ve stayed both in Cordoba and Seville, and the excellent service is consistent throughout. The hotel is located about a 15-minute walk from the center, and with its large underground parking, it’s especially convenient for those on a road trip in Andalusia.

We stayed in one of their standard rooms, which, like all their other hotels, is spacious – and it includes an additional door leading to the bathroom. When you travel often, you come to appreciate such details. 🙂 On top of the hotel, you’ll find a lovely pool with a view over Granada, and the hotel has its own restaurant. In the morning, there’s the usual giant breakfast buffet, which is why we choose this hotel chain again and again.
