A holiday in Flensburg can be highly recommended. The city is located just south of the Danish border and is always well visited by tourists. In addition to the beautiful nature, the city also offers lots of attractions.

The old duchies, Schleswig and Holstein, were once part of Denmark, and in Flensburg many speak, or at least understand, Danish. There is plenty to see in the area, and the hotel prices are reasonable – so why not go on a weekend break to Flensburg!

Here you’ll get some great travel tips, but you can also plan your visit at the tourist information in Flensburg: Welcome to holidays in Flensburg Firth!

A walk along the fjord is a must! If you visit the city during the summer months, you can board one of the many tour boats and see the city from the water side. Also visit the working shipyard, which builds and exhibits replicas of historic sailing cargo ships and boats from the 18th and 19th centuries. Read more here: Museumswerft Flensburg.

The town has always been a center of the extensive Baltic Sea trade, both on land where several important trade routes met – Hærvejen or Ochsenweg, which ran from north to south, and the east-west-going road between Angel and northern Friesland – and also on water, due to the very large occurrences of herring in the fjord.

Flensburg offers many great restaurants. Do visit the cozy brewery, Hansens Brauerei, which offers classic North German dishes, such as Grillhaxe and Sauerkraut. Between the large, polished boilers at the brewery there is a festive atmosphere, and you can order the famous “1 meter beer”.

The next morning offers brunch in the beautiful Marien-Café, the place with the 1000 coffee pots. You have to count them yourself, but there are a lot of coffee pots! However, visit the place for the excellent breakfast or the great cakes. It is recommended to book a table as the place is very well visited.

The city does a lot to give shoppers a great experience, and many shops are also open on Sundays. Take a stroll along the long shopping street or visit the large shopping center, Citti Park.

Through the long shopping street, small stalls have been set up where you can satisfy both thirst and hunger. If you come during the Christmas month, you can experienced the cozy Christmas market in Flensburg, which stretches from Nordermarkt all the way to Südermarkt with lots of stalls serving mulled wine, roasted almonds and other delicacies. In the many stalls you can buy Christmas decorations and handicrafts, for example the famous angel figures and nutcrackers from Erzgebirge.
