A guide to restaurants in Alicante

Are you looking for great restaurants in Alicante? Whether you are looking for traditional tapas or new Spanish cuisine, the resuarnts in Alicante have it all – but you have to know where to go! As for all other cities, a few minutes of googling is well spent, and you will find the really good restaurants in the Michelin Travel Guide app. However, it is also possible to find inexpensive restaurants in Alicante, and the locals like to grab a quick montadito, a small bread with delicious filling, along with a glass of wine.

Where to eat in Alicante

Before you go out for dinner, it is important to mention that there is also too many cheap restaurants with deep fried food. A rule of thumb is to avoid the most touristy cafés on the Esplanade d’Espagne and the first few streets up from the marina – with La Taberna Del Gourmet as an exception.

Be on the lookout for restaurants where the locals eat. If there are only tourists, it is often not a place where you want to dine. However, this only applies for eating out after 9 pm, because here you save the dinner, until the temperature i bearable. The restaurants that were completely empty a moment ago are then quickly filled up with locals who know where the best restaurants in Alicante are located. If possible, it is therefore a good idea to book a table from home.

4 great restaurants in Alicante

El Canto

The brown interior is reminiscent of a local inn, and that’s exactly what it is! El Canto is a tapas bar full of traditions, where you eat really good, local food! Be there in front of the door when they open, because the palce fills up very quickly. The serving is slightly chaotic, but very entertaining, and the turnover among the dining guests is big – the queue outside never stops growing.

Go for the traditional tapas with ham, cheese and shrimp and also try one or more montaditos, the small breads with fillings. Do as the other Spanish guests and choose a good, local beer.

El Portal

One of the stars of the city that you must not miss is the fashionable restaurant El Portal. Here you get an experience for both stomach and eye! While you wait for the food, you can enjoy the sight of the professional bartenders who mix colorful cocktails at the bar in the middle of the room.

The food is exquisite and definitely worth traveling for. In Alicante you can eat gourmet food at affordable prices. Try, for example, the fixed menu with snacks, two starters, fish, meat and dessert as well as the accompanying wine menu.

La Taberna del Gourmet

If you are looking for good tapas, and preferably something you have never tasted before, book a table at La Taberna Del Gourmet. In addition to the large menu, the restaurant also offers a small and a large menu.

The “small menu” is somewhat misleading, because there is much more food than most people can eat. A good piece of advice is to be a bit picky in a way to work to make room for the many dishes.

La Tasca del Barrio

Where the first three restaurants all had indoor dining, it is a little bit tricky to find a good restaurant out in the open air. There are many restaurants that would like to offer you a place where you can enjoy the Spanish summer evening, but the food at the tourist restaurants along the Rambla can sometimes be downright tacky.

If you go further into the old part of town, however, you can find excellent restaurants in the small, narrow streets. At La Tasca Del Barrio you get good and affordable tapas. The menu offers the well-known tapas and also pintxos, toasts with filling. Order a good glass of wine and enjoy life in the small street!

Excellent bars in Alicante

The locals love to go out and especially on Friday and Saturday it gets crowded in the bar streets around Carrer Castaños. Do visit the wine bar Syrah Wine Bar for a good glass of wine or go to the small street Calle San Pascual, where the tables are quickly filled with locals and tourists.

A good breakfast in Alicante

If you, as recommended below, choose to stay at hotel Suites Del Mar, you can enjoy the large breakfast buffet at the hotel. Here is everything the heart can desire of delicious bread, eggs and bacon, ham, fruit – and as the best – freshly squeezed juice from the sweetest oranges. After the tasty breakfast, there is only room for a small afternoon snack before the evening’s restaurant visit.

However, a bit less can also do the magic, and breakfast can easily consist of a good cup of café con leche and a crispy croissant, as it is served at Cafe El Mirador. You will find the cafe at the north end of the beach, close to the lift up to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. The trip up the hill is worth it because here you have a view of the sea in the morning sun.
