Our Trips to Rome

Ivan was still in his stroller back in 2006 when he first visited the Italian capital. We stayed in a private apartment near St. Peter’s Basilica, within walking distance of the Ottaviano station. This neighborhood is recommended for its proximity to both sights and shopping. Unfortunately, many tourist trap restaurants are around, so be sure to use our restaurant guide here: Best Restaurants In Rome – Find Them Here!

In 2016, Rune and Trine visited Rome for a romantic getaway, and again in 2019, we celebrated Ivan’s 14th birthday with another trip to the beautiful city. This time, we stayed just south of the Vatican. This area is lively, with priests and nuns dining alongside tourists at the local restaurants.

Great Hotels in Rome

Stay in a Medieval Tower

For a truly unique hotel experience, book a room at Residenza Torre Colonna. Built in 1247 to protect the noble Colonna family, this medieval tower now houses an exclusive boutique hotel. The historic tower features five spacious rooms and is centrally located near major attractions. Enjoy breakfast on the small rooftop terrace with views over the oldest part of the city. Residenza Torre Colonna offers a historic setting with modern amenities like a hot tub and air conditioning.

An Affordable Hotel in Charming Trastevere

Across the Tiber River, Trastevere is a neighborhood full of excellent restaurants and bars. Within walking distance of Campo de’ Fiori, you’ll find an affordable guesthouse, Relais Le Clarisse a Trastevere. This charming B&B was formerly a monastery of the Le Clarisse order. For a modest price, you can enjoy breakfast in the former nuns’ herb garden under shady olive and citrus trees. Right in front of the hotel, buses and trams are ready to take you to the city center. Relais Le Clarisse a Trastevere is perfect for those wanting an affordable stay in the historic Trastevere area.

An Apartment in Rome for Families

During our last visit to Rome, we stayed in a lovely apartment with a fantastic view of St. Peter’s Basilica. St Peter’s View Apartment is about a 10-minute walk from St. Peter’s Square. The apartment features two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom, and a small kitchen.

We never actually used the kitchen because we enjoyed daily coffee and the crispiest croissants at the nearby café Capitan Cono, just around the corner. We had dinner at some of the many delightful restaurants in Rome. Read more about the apartment here: St Peter’s View Apartment

How do you get to Rome?

Rome has two airports: Ciampino and Fiumicino. Ciampino is the oldest and smallest and is mainly used by the low cost airlines. Fiumicino is the largest, with more than 25 million passangers every year. Both airports are located south of the city, but at different ends, so remember to take the location of the airport into account when booking your hotel in Rome.
