10 ATTRACTIONS FOR CHILDREN IN AND AROUND FLENSBURG

MUSEUMSHAVNEN

The museum harbor is located right next to the maritime museum, that houses many fine historical sailing ships and a museum shipyard. Do visit Museumswerft Flensburg, the working shipyard that builds and exhibits copies of historic sailing cargo ships and boats from the 18th and 19th centuries. At the Schifffahrtsmuseum Flensburg you can see the exhibition about the history of the harbor and the old market town. The Rum Museum in the basement tells the story of the trade with the Danish West Indies and the slave era.

ALEXANDRA THE FJORD STEAMER

From the quayside opposite the maritime museum you can embark on a boat trip on the old salon steamer Alexandra. The fjord steamer, which dates from 1908, sails tourists around the Flensburg Fjord from May to October.

SWIMMING POOL CAMPUS BATH

For those who like to swim, there is also the large swimming pool, Campusbad, which is located on the university campus on the outskirts of the city. Once you have paid the entrance fee, you have access to the water slide, whirlpool and swimming pools.

HÆRVEJEN

The area has always been a center for the extensive Baltic Sea trade. Partly at sea due to the very large deposits of herring in the fjord and partly on land where several important trade routes met. From north to south Hærvejen or Ochsenweg, and the east-west-going road between Angel and northern Friesland. If you drive along the motorway, you pass the ancient Hærvej. You can’t see it from the road, but turn off at exit 75 and then left – and you will find yourself on Hærvejen. You will find a detailed map here: Map of Hærvejen. Choose hiking route 23 – Kliplev – Padborg.

CHRISTMAS MARKET

If you are in town around Christmas time, Flensburg has the finest Christmas market, and there are small stalls throughout the pedestrian street. The market stretches from Nordermarkt all the way to Südermarkt with lots of stalls serving mulled wine, roasted almonds and other delicacies. In the many stalls you can buy Christmas decorations and crafts, for example the famous angel figures and nutcrackers from Erzgebirge.

DANNEVIRKE

Dannevirke is the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe. In the Viking Age, the Danes started the construction of the fortification, which was built across the narrowest part of the Jutland peninsula. 40 km south of the current border, you can see parts of Dannevirke from the motorway. The Dannevirke Museum has exhibitions and events, and in the museum park the Dannevirke main rampart, Valdemarsmuren, the Thyraborg rampart and ramparts 14 from 1864 can be seen.

1000 COFFEE POTS AT MARIEN-CAFÉ

If you are looking for breakfast or brunch in Flensburg, Marien-Café, the place with the 1000 coffee pots, can be recommended. Brunch is served on huge cake stands, and of course there is a menu for the kids. If you are more in the mood for afternoon tea, then visit the place in the afternoon for the large selection of cakes. Once you have eaten, you can try counting all the coffee pots. Remember to book a table – the place is very popular for birthdays and excursions.

VIKING MUSEUM HEDEBY

In the Viking Age, Hedeby was Denmark’s largest and most important city, and as a trading place right in the middle of several of the then much used Hærvejen, it was a place where trade flourished. Today, in the Viking Museum Haithabu, you can walk between the reconstructed Viking houses and get an insight into how the daily life of that time unfolded.

MUSEUM ISLAND GOTTORP CASTLE

In the same area is also Gottorp Castle, which is the largest castle complex in Schleswig-Holstein’s and contains one of Germany’s largest and oldest archaeological museums. The Nydam boat, a 23-meter-long oak ship from the Iron Age, is on display in the old stables.
