LOS ANGELES ATTRACTIONS FOR CHILDREN

You have probably already planned a visit to both Disneyland or Universal Studios, but a vacation in Los Angeles with kids offers many other great attractions and sights for children. Here you will find a small selection of the things you and your children can enjoy in the City of Angels.

You can also stay up to date on events and concerts in the Los Angeles Magazine guide. Below you will also find tips for great hotels in Los Angeles, all of which can be easily booked through Booking.com.

ATTRACTIONS FOR A VACATION IN LOS ANGELES WITH CHILDREN

DISNEYLAND

The magic starts in Disneyland! On a vacation in Los Angeles with kids, the giant theme park is a must. Here you can meet all the famous Disney characters, go on a jungle safari with Indiana Jones or ride the roller coaster in Disney California Adventure Park. The huge park is divided into several areas, and it requires a little planning from home if you want to see all the things you want to experience.

HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD

Hollywood Boulevard is the Walk of Fame with the pink stars in the sidewalk, Disney teddy bears and the chocolate fountain in the same store, hordes of other tourists, museums, flashing lights, plastic souvenirs – and actually really fun too! Some will think that Hollywood Boulevard is too touristy and plastic-like, but the street is also a must-see on a trip to Los Angeles. On and around Hollywood Boulevard something always happens! If you get hungry on the trip, there are many fast food restaurants on the parallel street Sunset Boulevard just south of Hollywood Boulevard.

THE PIER IN SANTA MONICA

You probably already know Santa Monica from the many movies and TV series that have been filmed here. The wide sandy beaches stretch all the way down past Venice Beach and attract many tourists. Most famous is probably The Pier, one of the most photographed landmark in the world, and at the far end of the pier is the famous amusement park, where you can take a ride in the Ferris wheel.

Also bring your swimming gear for a swim in the Pacific Ocean and soak up the sun on the beautiful beach. There are toilets and changing rooms along the beach. In the Santa Monica Place shopping center, which is a two-minute walk from the coastline, you can buy swimwear if you forgot it at home at the hotel. Just behind the shopping center is the shopping street Third Street Promenade, where you can find all the popular chain stores.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

In the movie city Universal Studios Hollywood you can get behind the scenes of many of the popular movies and TV series. But the famous movie tour offers much more than that. Universal Studios is also an amusement park where you can visit the world of Harry Potter in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or meet the Minions in Despicable Me. Universal Studios is one of the most popular attractions in Los Angeles, and it is advisable to book tickets from home.

AVILA ADOBE

Between skyscrapers, flashing commercials and the big freeways, it’s hard to imagine that there once was – nothing. Take a trip back in time and visit Avila Adobe, the oldest house in Los Angeles. The house has stood here since 1818, when the area still belonged to Mexico and is today designed to reflect California’s lifestyle in the 1840s. It was originally built by Don Francisco Jose Avila, the then mayor of Los Angeles.

In a city where everything is so expensive, it is nice to have one free attraction. It doesn’t cost anything to visit Avila Adobe, which you will find on Olvera Street in Downtown, and is open every day from 9.00 to 16.00.

GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY

The views from the Griffith Observatory are breathtaking, and here you can see the Hollywood sign up close. Admission to the observatory and park is free, while it costs $ 7 for adults / £ 5 for children to see the performances at the planetarium. It is expensive to park here, instead take the bus from Vermont / Sunset, which costs 35 cents if you have a TAP card, a travel card for bus and metro, which is bought at the stations.

ROSE PARADE

If you are going to be in Los Angeles over the New Year, you can enjoy the Rose Parade in Pasadena. In the festive New Year’s procession, you can see both flower-decorated carriages, tribute heroes from football teams and fire brigades and marching bands. The procession starts at 8 am, but all night the subway is filled with happy spectators who flock into the streets of Pasadena early in the morning to get at good spot to watch the parade from.

NB! It can in no way be recommended to take the car to Pasadena on January 1st. 700,000 other people have to travel in the same direction! Instead, take the yellow subway line to Pasadena and get off at Memorial Park. It is at the end of the parade, and here it is not so crowded and thus an opportunity to get to see something. Bring your own chair and a packed lunch.

BUY SPORT TICKETS FOR A GAME IN LOS ANGELES

Many children will love the great experience it is to get the chance to watch one of the big teams play match in Los Angeles. If you’re into football, you can watch the Los Angeles Rams play at the SoFi Stadium. If ice hockey is the favorite, you can watch the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center in Downtown LA. The Los Angeles Lakers also play the same place if you are more into basketball. If you want to experience the popular sport of baseball, then the Los Angeles Dodgers play at Dodger Stadium.

It’s safe to bring children to even the big matches. The Americans attend sport events in a different way than in Europe: In the US there are no dead-drunk football fans who are just here to pick a fight. Americans love their home team and they party with them in a nice way where everyone can join.

FAST FOOD – AND A LOT OF IT!

All the well-known fast food chains are here in Los Angeles: Taco Bell, Carl’s Jr., Wendy’s and Jack in the Box, serving breakfast from early morning to late at night. Americans love their fast food, and here you can hear families talking together in all languages.

The best fast food chain in California is without a doubt the In-N-Out Burger, which serves the city’s best burger. The concept has not changed since opening in 1948 and is quite simple: cheeseburgers that you can expand depending on your appetite. For example, order a 4 × 4 (four by four) with four beef patties and four slices of cheese.

A GREAT HOTEL IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD

When we were going to Los Angeles, we asked friends and family if they could recommend a good hotel in the city. Trine’s sister and brother-in-law had stayed at The Garland Hotel the year before – which they really liked. They said: It’s a bit expensive, but worth every dollar! Here yo can take a dip in the swimming pool, eat a Nutella toast for breakfast and get a good nights sleep in the large Queen beds that are big enough for two. There is a free shuttle bus to Universal Studios. The hotel is located in the northeastern part of Los Angeles, close to the freeway, so it is easy to get around the city by car.

A GOOD AND AFFORDABLE HOTEL – WITH AN AUTHENTIC DINER

One of our friends recommended a good and affordable hotel close to Hollywood Boulevard, The Adler a Hollywood Hills Hotel. Here you live with Hollywood Boulevard just around the corner and close to both the subway (Hollywood / Vine) and the exit to the freeway. The hotel has its own swimming pool, and there is a refrigerator and microwave in the room. In the same building you will also find The 101 Coffee Shop, an authentic diner with the best breakfast menu.

AN APARTMENT IN LOS ANGELES FOR A FAMILY

Along with the recommendations, we searched around ourselves and eventually found a really nice apartment in Downtown LA. The apartment in Wilshire Apartments met all our needs for location and comfort. The apartment consisted of a room and a combined living room / kitchen, where the living room had a sofa bed. There was a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washer and dryer and TV with the very large TV package.

Upstairs in the other building was the swimming pool and gym, which we had free access to, and a free space in the parking basement was also reserved for us. Just across the road is a large supermarket as well as a Starbucks (with WIFI!).
