The beautiful marbled cathedral reigns over the city with its decorated towers, and here it has been standing here since 1386. Or, in fact, it was not completed until 600 years later. Visit the beautiful church room and prepare to be impressed by the huge vaults.

Leonardo da Vinci

The Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci is known for his many inventions and beautiful paintings, and especially the Mona Lisa. In Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, the action evolves around the great artist, and large parts of the story take place in Milan, where da Vinci lived.

Born in the small village of Vinci and raised in Florence, it was especially in the years when Leonardo da Vinci lived in Milan that he created some of his greatest works. The great wealth of the city attracted the scientists of the time who, among their patrons, found their livelihood.

In the years 1482 to 1499, da Vinci worked for the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, for whom he decorated the great castle, Castello Sforzesco, which you can read about below. On a visit to Milan, take time to admire da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper , which can be seen in the convent of Santa Maria della Grazie. If you have more time, a visit to the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci is highly recommended.

Castello Sforzesco

Leonardo da Vinci was, along with other artists and architects, hired by the Sforza family to reconstruct and decorate the original fortification on the site, which was built in the 14th century. When visiting the castle, please note how deep the walls are. During the years, Castello Sforzesco was constantly under attack from Italian, French, German and Spanish forces.

Today, the castle is a museum with many smaller collections, and there is a lot to see. Before taking a tour of the castle, you can plan your visit at the overview map to select the best parts. However, don’t miss the Sala delle Asse, where Leonardoda Vinci has decorated the ceiling with plant motifs, making you feel like you are walking around outside in a park.

In the Archaeological Museum of Milan, the many exhibitions tell about the exciting history of Milan. In the former monastery you can see the imprints that both the Roman Empire and the large Milanese families have left on the city.
