The taste of South Funen

Come with us on a culinary tour to the South Funen! In the summer, the area is like a large, bulging pantry, with many exciting food producers and breweries. Svendborg is also home to the food festival Culinary Market, the largest food fair in Scandinavia Expect sausages, fish and vegetables, a cheese festival and beer from the local breweries.

South Funen – a region full of delicacies

But also the rest of the year there are exciting culinary experiences on South Funen in a number that you will not find anywhere else. Funen is often called The Pantry of Denmark, and if Funen is the pantry, then South Funen is the top shelf with all the delicacies!

The area is filled with local producers of both chocolate, wine, cheese and beer. Many of the things you can taste at the good restaurants in Svendborg are from the area. If you want to go out and see for yourself the goods are produced and maybe buy an edible souvenir, you can take a culinary trip to producers and farm shops in the area. Culinary tour on South Funen – 8 tasteful experiences

Svendborg

Start in Svendborg, where the square in the center of the city is transformed into a marketplace every Saturday. Here you can buy local vegetables, fish and cheese. At Byens Gårdbutik in Vestergade, you will find local produce and delicious products from the farms around South Funen. In the small, organic bakery, Brødkompagniet, you can buy freshly baked croissants, ever so crispy and flaky. The city’s other organic bakery, Baguette, with equally lovely bread and cakes, can be found at the top of Møllergade.

Svendborg Vingaard

The next stop is Svendborg Vingaard, which you will find by leaving Svendborg towards Nyborg and then making a turn towards Gammel Skårupvej. The grapes grown here are transformed into white wine and dessert wine, just as a sparkling birch wine is made from freshly tapped birch sap. During the berry season, blueberry wine, blackcurrant rum and blackberry wine are produced, among other things. Svendborg Vingaard has a tour with tastings throughout the summer.

Ø-Bryg

From here, the journey continues towards Thurø. Pass the small dam to the island and then turn left to visit Ø-Bryg in Thurø Bryghus. Here, local beer is brewed with names that fit the maritime history of Sydfyn. Taste a Steamship beer or a Sailing ship beer or join one of the interesting beer tastings.

Skarø Is

Back in Svendborg again, the trip now goes over the water with the small ferry, Højestene ( remember to book!). The ferry docks at Skarø, where you can taste the famous Skarø Ice Cream, which is sweetened with birch sap. Skarø is especially known around the world for the collaboration with Singapore Airlines, for whom they produce a Singapore Sling ice cream – and of course for the good taste!

Høkildegård Landhandel

Back on the mainland, the trip now heads west towards Fåborg. In Vester Skerninge, turn off towards Høkildegård Landhandel, which is located right on the edge of Syltemade Ådal and The Archipelago Trail. In the small farm shop you can buy meat from pigs, cows, goats and sheep, all from your own breeding. There are cuts for the freezer and ready-made delicacies such as sausages, pork chops and lamb rolls. From the small farm you can also buy fresh vegetables according to the season.

Gundestrup Mejeri og Bryghus

Next, the trip continues a little further down the country road towards Fåborg, until you can make a turn for Gundestrup. Here lies Gundestrup Mejeri og Bryghus, both dairy and brewery. Gundestrup is especially known for their smoked cheese, but in the small farm shop you can also buy Svendbo and Fynbo cheese as well as craft beers that go with the cheeses.

Konnerup & Co

Last stop before heading back is Vester Åby, where the luxury chocolate shop Konnerup & Co is located. From the large windows in the beautiful shop, there is a look out into the chocolate production – another distraction while you try to choose between all the delicious items. Here is homemade ice cream, cream buns, licorice and the most delicious chocolate!

Svendborgsund Bryghus

After the long trip around South Funen, it’s time for a beer! The last stop is Svendborgsund Bryghus, which you’ll when driving back towards Svendborg and then continuing over the bridge to Tåsinge. In the microbrewery, located in the old car workshop in Vindeby, you can buy beer and organic lemonades. Both beer and lemonades are brewed according to old methods without additives or pasteurization.
