Have a great vacation in Svendborg

In the summer it is great to take a trip to the beautiful city of Svendborg. When the sun is shining, there are few places in Denmark that are more beautiful than the small market town in the South Funen Archipelago. The city offers many good restaurants and lots of experiences, but first and foremost, the view over the water invites you to relax!

Svendborg is a certified Cittaslow city, an international network of smaller cities that work to increase the quality of life for their inhabitants and focus on local products. It is felt everywhere you go, and the people of Svendborg are proud of the relaxed lifestyle: here you live well, and here you eat well!

Attractions in Svendborg

Many tourists visit Svendborg to go swimming. South Funen has some of the very best beaches in Denmark. In Svendborg, we have the shallow and kids-friendly beach by the round marina in the middle of the city and then Christiansminde Strand just east of the city. Walk along the beautiful path next to the sea side water and find the many signs that the area has been a recreational area for the people of Svendborg for more than 200 years. Here they went out to enjoy a refreshment in forest and were entertained with a dance hall, bike path and a tower.

Every Saturday, the square in Svendborg is transformed into a food market, where you can buy vegetables, fish, cheese and local souvenirs. On the last weekend of June, the market will be expanded into the Culinary Market, which is the largest food fair in Scandinavia. At the end of the summer, we have the Old Town Market.

From Svendborg you can take the ferry to the small, southern Funen islands: Ærø , Drejø, Skarø and Hjortø. Ærø is the largest, and it is advisable to book a nihght or two for your stay. Here you can go on adventures in the old streets, visit a bottle ship museum or rent bicycles and enjoy the beautiful nature. Read more about Ærø here: A daytrip to Ærøskøbing. On Skarø you can enjoy the famous Skarø ice cream to the sound of the bell frogs in the street pond or go to Skarø Festival, also run by Rune and his businnes partner. On Drejø you can have a nice meal at the inn.

Shopping in Svendborg

Svendborg has two major pedestrian streets: Gerritsgade and Møllergade, with cozy detours to Kattesundet and Korsgade. In addition to high street stores such as VERO MODA and Zizzi, you will find smaller boutiques with clothing you can’t by elsewhere.

If you want a unique gift or souvenir, Svendborg has many skilled artisans. Jalfe sells handicrafts and clothes, Catz sells earrings and jewelery and at Pottemager Tina Thomsen you will find the most beautiful pottery. Also visit Skab & Værk in Brogade, a unique shop community for local artists.

Good restaurants in Svendborg

Svendborg offers many good places to eat. The city’s best restaurant, Restaurant Resumé, is located at the top of Møllergade. The restaurant offers a set menu with small and big surprises – but remember to book a table well in advance if you want to be sure to get a seat.

Restaurant Thude´s in Frederiksgade offers treats from the French cuisine, and if you are looking for a really good burger, then you should go to Jettes Diner in Brogade. If you’re in the mood for a pizza, you’ll get the best at Bella Italia. If you’d like a good cup of coffee, you will find Knæwr Kaffebar by the fountain in Gerritsgade.

Town guide for Svendborg

In Svendborg, something always happens! In 2016, a survey showed that in the city there are on average 750 concerts every year, that is, two a day. Many events are gathered in Det sker Sydfyn. It’s in Danish, but if you see something interesting, run it through Google Translate.

Also visit Rune’s bar, Kammerateriet. Here, the beach bar is also open all summer, where you can enjoy the view over the water with a glass of wine. Otherwise, the nightlife is concentrated at the beginning of Gerritsgade, where you will find cozy bars and cafés, and discos and pubs are located in Frederiksgade.
