AMAZING SIGHTS IN LOS ANGELES

THE PIER IN SANTA MONICA

You probably already know Santa Monica from the many movies and TV series filmed here. The wide sandy beaches stretch all the way down past Venice Beach and attract many tourists. Most famous is probably The Pier, one of the most photographed landmark in the world, and at the far end of the pier is the famous amusement park, where you can take a ride in the Ferris wheel.

Take your swimwear for a swim in the Pacific Ocean and soak up the sun on the beautiful beach. In the Santa Monica Place Mall, a two-minute walk from the coast, you can buy a new bikini if you forgot your own at home. Just behind the shopping center is the cozy shopping street Third Street Promenade, where you can find all the popular chain stores.

AVILA ADOBE – THE OLDEST HOUSE IN LOS ANGELES

Between skyscrapers, flashing commercials and the big freeways, it’s hard to imagine that there once was – nothing. Go back in time and visit Avila Adobe, the oldest house in Los Angeles. The house has been standing here since 1818, when the area still belonged to Mexico and is today designed to reflect California’s lifestyle in the 1840s.

There is free admission to the house, originally built by Don Francisco Jose Avila, the then mayor of Los Angeles. You will find Avila Adobe on Olvera Street in Downtown, and it is open every day from 9 am to 4 pm.

ROSE PARADE

On New Year’s Day, you can enjoy the Rose Parade in Pasadena. The festive New Year’s procession is definitely worth a visit! In the beautiful parade you can see both flower-decorated carriages, heroes from football teams, fire brigades and marching bands. And it’s all free.

NB! It can in no way be recommended to go by car to Pasadena on January 1st. 700,000 other people have to go the same way! Instead, take the yellow subway line to Pasadena and get off at Memorial Park. It is at the end of the parade, and here it is not so crowded and thus an opportunity to get to see something.

When you get out of the station, there are signs all the way to the parade area. Incidentally, the procession starts at 8 am, but all night the subway is filled with happy spectators who have to go out into the streets of Pasadena early to get a good spot. When the procession reaches its end, many of the spectators start moving towards Rose Bowl Stadium. On New Year’s Day, the traditional Rose Bowl Game is played, one of the big finals in college football.

BUY TICKETS FOR A HOME GAME IN LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles is home to many of the big teams: Are you into football, you can watch the Los Angeles Rams play at the SoFi Stadium. If you like ice hockey, you can watch the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center in Downtown LA. At the same place  Los Angeles Lakers also plays, if you would rather watch basketball. If you want to experience the popular sport of baseball, then the Los Angeles Dodgers play at Dodger Stadium.

It’s not just men who can provide the cool sports experiences in Los Angeles. Roller derby is a big thing in Los Angeles, where the strong, female players are a mix of pin up girls and raw thugs. Roller derby is a contact sport which is played on roller skates. See for example the Hollywood Scarlets, with players such as Death Down Under and Volcanic Smash.

The big sporting events are a great opportunity to get out and meet the Americans. Here, high and low meet, rich and poor, and even if you are not a big sports fan, the overwhelming atmosphere and entertainment before and during the match is a huge experience and one of the great sights in Los Angeles that you must see.

VENICE BEACH

If you are looking for alternative experiences in Los Angeles, take a trip down to Venice Beach. Here, where a piece of Berlin’s Kreuzberg has settled onto the beach, you will find large wall paintings, punks and organic coffee with organic and vegan plant milk.

If you have seen Californication, you already know the Venice Canals, built after Venice. And if you remember Hank Moody with a personality that is out of control and constantly on the hunt for new, extreme experiences, then you also understand that this is the only neighborhood in Los Angeles where it would be believable that the crazy screenwriter should settle down.

Also take a walk on Abbott Kinney Boulevard with the many small independent and quirky shops. Here you will find furniture design, clothes that are not mainstream, ceramics and delicious restaurants.

LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY

If you should pass it, do not deceive yourself for a visit to the Los Angeles Public Library. Partly to enjoy the impressive building with the many collections, and partly the library tells something about just how many cultures have come to the city over time.

In the library there are books in many languages: of course English and Spanish, but also the Scandinavian languages have found a place on the shelves.

GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY

Have you seen La La Land with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, then you might remember the scene where they dance with the lights of Los Angeles as a backdrop. The place exists in reality, and the beauty of the film is not embellished. The views from the Griffith Observatory are breathtaking, especially in the evening, and you can get great pictures of the Hollywood sign for the collection.

Admission to the observatory and park is free, while it costs $ 7 for adults / £ 5 for children to see the performances at the planetarium. It is expensive to park here, so take the bus from Vermont / Sunset instead, which costs 35 cents if you have a TAP card.

A GREAT HOTEL IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD

When we were going to Los Angeles, we asked friends and family if they could recommend a good hotel in the city. Trine’s sister and brother-in-law had stayed at The Garland Hotel the year before – which they really liked. They said: It’s a bit expensive, but worth every dollar! Here yo can take a dip in the swimming pool, eat a Nutella toast for breakfast and get a good nights sleep in the large Queen beds that are big enough for two. There is a free shuttle bus to Universal Studios. The hotel is located in the northeastern part of Los Angeles, close to the freeway, so it is easy to get around the city by car.

A GOOD AND AFFORDABLE HOTEL – WITH AN AUTHENTIC DINER

One of our friends recommended a good and affordable hotel close to Hollywood Boulevard, The Adler a Hollywood Hills Hotel. Here you live with Hollywood Boulevard just around the corner and close to both the subway (Hollywood / Vine) and the exit to the freeway. The hotel has its own swimming pool, and there is a refrigerator and microwave in the room. In the same building you will also find The 101 Coffee Shop, an authentic diner with the best breakfast menu.

AN APARTMENT IN LOS ANGELES FOR A FAMILY

Along with the recommendations, we searched around ourselves and eventually found a really nice apartment in Downtown LA. The apartment in Wilshire Apartments met all our needs for location and comfort. The apartment consisted of a room and a combined living room / kitchen, where the living room had a sofa bed. There was a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washer and dryer and TV with the very large TV package.

Upstairs in the other building was the swimming pool and gym, which we had free access to, and a free space in the parking basement was also reserved for us. Just across the road is a large supermarket as well as a Starbucks (with WIFI!).
