FIND THE GREAT RESTAURANTS IN LOS ANGELES

Are you looking for great restaurants in Los Angeles? Los Angeles is a big city where you can get great food everywhere. The city is a melting pot of many different cultures. It’s most noticeable in the Californian cuisine, which in the most literal sense of the word is a fusion cuisine. Mexican burritos meet Dutch donuts and Japanese sushi, which in turn meets Italian cuisine with pizza sold from the food truck on the street corner.

So with all this great food, what should you choose?

AUTHENTIC RESTAURANTS IN LOS ANGELES

It’s close to an impossible to make a guide to the best restaurants in Los Angeles – there are simply too many to choose from! As in all other travel destinations, however, it is a good idea to go for the places where the locals eat, because here there is a guarantee of good and authentic dining experiences. So where do Americans eat in Los Angeles?

If you want to do your research from home and read about the latest and most hyped restaurants, check out LA Mag. The Los Angeles Guide, which has been in existence since 1961, can give you a great idea of where to go to find the best restaurants in Los Angeles.

However, the locals are always on their way around the city and they like a quick bite on the road. It is an advantage for you who as a tourist want to walk around and see as much as possible of the city, because there is good food everywhere. Here you can therefore find tips for a quick-bite on the spot for you who want to go out and see something – and who want to eat where the Americans go!

BEST BURGER IN LOS ANGELES: IN-N-OUT BURGER

If you love fast food, then you’ll find yourself in heaven here in Los Angeles. All the well-known fast food chains are here, plus some that have not yet come to Europe. There are Taco Bell, Carl’s Jr., Wendy’s and Jack in the Box, serving breakfast from early morning till late in the evening.

The best fast food chain in California is without a doubt the In-N-Out Burger. Here you get without comparison the best burger in town. The concept has not changed since opening in 1948 and is quite simple: cheeseburgers that you can expand depending on your appetite. For example, order a 4 × 4 (four by four) with four beef patties and four slices of cheese.

If you’re in Hollywood, you’ll find the In-N-Out Burger at 7009 Sunset Boulevard. However, there are many others who have also got a taste for the good burgers, and here you should expect a waiting time of at least half an hour. If you choose the restaurant at the station in Culver City (on the way out to Santa Monica) instead, the line is shorter.

BEST DINER IN LOS ANGELES: 101 COFFEE SHOP

In LA there are diners and restaurants that serve breakfast all day. Here, 101 Coffee Shop is to be recommended as one of the best breakfast diners in Los Angeles. You may already know it from the movie Swingers or from the HBO series Entourage.

And it’s not without reason that the diner is popular as a movie location. The place is similar to the prototype of what we understand by the American diner. From the authentic 1960s diner interior with formica tables and upholstered leather seats to the cool types who visit The 101 Coffee Shop, you’ll get a unique experience of the United States.

The food is also in a league of its own. One of the specialties is Eggs Benedicts, but you must not visit the place without also trying the pancakes. Or a milkshake. Or the coffee, which Special Agent Dale Cooper from the Twin Peaks series would describe as: “a damn fine cup of coffee”!

You’ll find The 101 Coffee Shop just north of Hollywood Boulevard, at the east end. Read more here: 101 Coffee Shop

BEST BURRITOS IN LOS ANGELES: GILBERT’S EL INDIO

When you step into Gilbert’s El Indio, you may be in doubt as to whether you have driven too far and ended up somewhere below the border to Mexico. The waiter speaks Spanish, there is Mariachi music in the speakers and colored, hand-woven rugs on the walls.

Gilbert’s El Indio is out in the middle of nowhere – between Venice and Santa Monica. If you come by bus, you have to walk a bit – but the Mexican restaurant is definitely worth the trip! Gilbert’s has been in the same place for 44 years and is run by the third generation in the family. The restaurant is very popular, both among the locals Mexicans, but just as much among all the other cultures that Los Angeles is full of.

The food is also delicious and full of flavor. Feel free to try their burritos – of course with a Margarita. And wait before you order dessert, there is a lot of food on the plates!

OLDEST DINER IN LOS ANGELES: THE ORIGINAL PANTRY CAFE

Since 1924, The Original Pantry Cafe has been serving food to their guests. And they mean it quite literally! The diner has not been closed a single day – or night – since the opening.

Visit the diner to sense how life once was among the people of Los Angeles. Enjoy the fine, old photographs on the walls and the original interior. Order the delicious Philly cheese steak sandwich, which is served with coleslaw. Also save some space for dessert!

A GREAT HOTEL IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD

When we were going to Los Angeles, we asked friends and family if they could recommend a good hotel in the city. Trine’s sister and brother-in-law had stayed at The Garland Hotel the year before – which they really liked. They said: It’s a bit expensive, but worth every dollar! Here yo can take a dip in the swimming pool, eat a Nutella toast for breakfast and get a good nights sleep in the large Queen beds that are big enough for two. There is a free shuttle bus to Universal Studios. The hotel is located in the northeastern part of Los Angeles, close to the freeway, so it is easy to get around the city by car.

A GOOD AND AFFORDABLE HOTEL – WITH AN AUTHENTIC DINER

One of our friends recommended a good and affordable hotel close to Hollywood Boulevard, The Adler a Hollywood Hills Hotel. Here you live with Hollywood Boulevard just around the corner and close to both the subway (Hollywood / Vine) and the exit to the freeway. The hotel has its own swimming pool, and there is a refrigerator and microwave in the room. In the same building you will also find The 101 Coffee Shop, an authentic diner with the best breakfast menu.

AN APARTMENT IN LOS ANGELES FOR A FAMILY

Along with the recommendations, we searched around ourselves and eventually found a really nice apartment in Downtown LA. The apartment in Wilshire Apartments met all our needs for location and comfort. The apartment consisted of a room and a combined living room / kitchen, where the living room had a sofa bed. There was a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washer and dryer and TV with the very large TV package.

Upstairs in the other building was the swimming pool and gym, which we had free access to, and a free space in the parking basement was also reserved for us. Just across the road is a large supermarket as well as a Starbucks (with WIFI!).
