WHERE TO SHOP IN BERLIN?

Are you going shopping in Berlin? In addition to the many historical monuments, interesting exhibitions and a crazy nightlife, Berlin also offers lots of great shopping opportunities. Berlin really is one of the best places to shop in Europe.

Especially if you have an alternative style, the multiple independent designer shops in Berlin will be just the thing for you. The city is a paradise for hipsters, pinup girls and punks. However, you will also find many large shopping malls with all the well-known brands.

Here you can read about where to go to find it all!

KURFÜRSTENDAMM

Kurfürstendamm, or just Ku’damm, is the most famous shopping street in Berlin. On the 3,5 km long street you will find all the famous shops with designer labels that you can think of – and many more. In general, the whole area around Kurfürstendamm is an eldorado for shoppers. If you get hungry along the way, especially the area facing Kantstrasse offers lots of good restaurants.

KADEWE

The Kurfürstendamm continues into the Tauentzienstrasse, where you will find KaDeWe, or the Kaufhaus des Westens. KaDeWe is a crown jewel in the world of department stores and the heart of old capitalist West Berlin. Here is all the luxury you could ever want and everyone is welcome to just come in and browse the aisles. Do visit the chocolate department and try to count how many different kinds of chocolate you can actually get. Also remember to stop by the large food and restaurant section on the 6th floor, where you will find delicacies from around the world.

SHOPPING MALLS IN BERLIN

In Berlin you will also find many other large shopping centers than KaDeWe. In fact, there are more than 70 small and large shopping malls and markets in Berlin. Read about the most popular here:

BIKINI BERLIN

If you are looking for upcoming designers and modern works of art, then visit Bikini Berlin on Breitscheidplatz, a five minute walk from the Bahnhof Zoo. Here, entrepreneurs can rent one of the 70 pop-up stores for up to a year. It also means that there is always something new to look at every time you come to Berlin. If you get hungry, you can enjoy your lunch with a view of the animals at the Berlin Zoo, which is adjacent to the building.

EAST SIDE MALL

The East Side Mall, the newest shopping center in Berlin, opened in October 2018. You will find it directly opposite the Warschauer Straße station and is therefore a perfect shopping destination for tourists in Friedrichshain. In the 180 stores, including Weekday, Berschka and Vero Moda, there’s much to see. The East Side Mall also offers a gym, a cinema and a bowling alley.

MALL OF BERLIN

Close to Potsdamer Platz you will find the Mall of Berlin, which opened in 2014. The Mall of Berlin has 270 stores, including COS, Desigual, Intimissimi and Karl Lagerfeld. The shopping center also houses the city’s largest food market, with many restaurants and cafés.

ALEXA

The Alexa shopping center is right next to the Fernsehturm and Alexanderplatz. In fact, it’s hard to overlook, big and pink as it is. In the 180 stores you can find clothes from Primark, Tommy Hilfiger and Mango and electronics from Saturn. One of the really popular places for shopping in Berlin!

THE SMALL TRENDY STREETS WITH THE QUIRKY AND FUN SHOPS

If you are looking for indenpendent fashion designers, alternative labels, hand-sewn bags and vintage finds, head out into the city and visit the smaller shopping streets:

HACKESCHER MARKT

In and around Hackescher Markt, on Hachkesche Höfe and especially up the streets Rosenthaler Straße and Oranienburger Straße, you will find many small and edgy designer shops next to the big chain stores. On Friedrichstrasse, East Berlin’s answer to the Kurfürstendamm, you will find all the luxury brands.

PRENZLAUER BERG

Kastanienallee in the Prenzlauer Berg district is also one of the very popular shopping streets. Here you will find new design labels, curious vintage shops, used records and lots of restaurants and cafes.

KREUZBERG

In Kreuzberg it is on the streets Oranienstrasse and Bergmannstrasse that you will find all the small, exciting shops. When it gets dark, Oranienstrasse in particular is crowded with young people, on their way to a fun evening out in the city at the many cafés and bars in the area.

OPENING HOURS IN BERLIN

The opening hours in Berlin are very similar to those you find in other big cities around Europe. Most shops and malls are open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm. Oddly enough for a big city like Berlin, everything is generally closed all over on Sundays.
